Is this virtual escape room free?
Yes — most rooms are completely free. The beginner rooms require no account at all. Just open the link and play. A small library of harder rooms requires a one-time unlock.
How many people can play at once?
Party Mode works with any group size. Most rooms play best with 2-6 people — enough to have different perspectives without too many cooks. The host controls navigation while everyone else contributes ideas.
Do we all need accounts?
The host needs an account to start Party Mode. Guests can join with just the party code — no account or download needed on their end.
Can we play on a video call?
Absolutely. Many groups just screenshare the host's browser over Zoom, Google Meet, or Discord. Party Mode is the native option but screensharing works perfectly too.
What devices does this work on?
Any modern browser on desktop or tablet. Mobile works for most rooms but a laptop or desktop gives a better experience on the multi-page puzzles.
How is this different from paid virtual escape room companies?
Commercial virtual escape rooms charge $10-30 per person for a facilitated 60-minute session. EscapeTheWebsite is self-paced, self-hosted, and free to start. The puzzles are harder and more varied, and you can replay as many times as you like.
