Can we play from different houses?

You do not need to be on a video call, though plenty of people keep one open anyway. Free rooms are free to play together, so a long-distance date night can cost nothing.
How long does an escape room take?
Between 15 and 90 minutes depending on the room. Most couples find 25 to 45 minutes is the sweet spot for one evening. There is no timer and no penalty for going slow — progress saves automatically, so you can stop halfway and finish tomorrow.
Do we both have to pay?
No. Free rooms are free for both of you, always. For paid rooms, only the host needs access — with a Party Pass your partner joins the full room at no cost to them. Compare that to booked virtual escape rooms, which typically charge per person per session.
What if one of us is much better at puzzles?
